Belleville Tour
"On Friday March 16th the NDTA Young Leaders Group in Scott St.-Louis was honored to receive a tour of the Belleville News-Democrat in Belleville, IL.
The Belleville News-Democrat was founded in 1858 as the Weekly Democrat. In the early 1860s, it merged with the Belleville News to become the Belleville News-Democrat. It was a family-owned newspaper until 1972, when it was purchased by Capital Cities Communications. When Disney acquired Capital Cities, it briefly owned the News-Democrat until Knight Ridder acquired the newspaper in 1997. McClatchy acquired the paper in 2006 with its purchase of Knight Ridder. We were privileged to be hosted by a tour guide who is a 4th generation Belleville News-Democrat employee. Jeanne Newton has been in the newspaper business her entire career, and has followed in the footsteps of her mother (one the first paper girls), grandfather, and great-grandfather. It was an outstanding honor to be educated by one of the most knowledgeable people in the new paper industry. Jeanne provided us with a thorough presentation on the history of the newspaper as well as a tour of the entire building. Above all, she educated us on the entire continuum of the news production effort; from printing plants, to production, the distribution network, and how the news business is, not surprisingly, evolving as our lives become increasingly dependent on the World Wide Web."
